American Red Cross Volunteer Participates at National Level

The Mid-Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross is pleased to announce that Ken Poff has been elected to the position of Vice-Chair of the National Diversity Council. The Council, which consists of twelve individuals elected nation-wide, provides advice to the American Red Cross Board of Governors and senior management related to achieving greater diversity and inclusiveness. The Vice-Chair serves a two-year term assisting the Chair in the work of the Council, normally succeeds as Chair for a following two-year term, and then serves for an additional two years as Chair of Volunteers for Diversity.

Emergency Food and Shelter Program for Evenings and Weekends Will Continue, but volunteers are needed to help provide the service.

The Capital Area United Way, City of Lansing, and the Mid-Michigan Chapter, American Red Cross have found a way to continue the Emergency Food and Shelter Program at the local Red Cross chapter site. After several meetings and much discussion, the Mid-Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross has pledged to continue providing emergency shelter, food and personal needs support for homeless persons and families.

The Mid-Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross announces its annual meeting: Thursday, June 19, 2003, 4:00 p.m., 1800 E. Grand River Avenue, Lansing, Michigan, Conference Room A/B (Second Floor)

According to chapter bylaws, the annual meeting is held, “for the purpose of holding elections, considering reports, and transacting such other business as may properly come before the meeting.”

Red Cross Announces GM Gift

The Mid-Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross is pleased to announce a $ 2,250 gift from the GM Foundation.  The gift comes by way of the GM Volunteer Plus Program. This program recognizes volunteer efforts of local GM employees who volunteer their time at the Red Cross Regional Food Distribution Center. Volunteer duties at the RFDC include sorting and repackaging food, driving the Mobile Food Pantry and assisting with the distribution of select food products.

Apartment Fires Melt Red Cross Resources

Local Red Cross officials report that the disaster services budget is feeling the heat from three recent apartment fires. Local volunteers have responded to three multiple unit apartment fires since March 23 and the strain on the budget is being felt throughout the agency. “Disaster response is why we’re here, it’s what our volunteers are trained to do,” said Raymond Thibeault, disaster services coordinator for Mid-Michigan Chapter. “But it does eat up the money quickly when these disasters happen so close together.”

Local Red Cross volunteer Robert Proctor has been selected to serve as Vice Chair for the 2004 American Red Cross National Convention. A resident of Lansing, Proctor has served the Mid-Michigan Chapter in a variety of volunteer positions -- including chair of the Board of Directors. Proctor’s nomination was submitted by local volunteer leadership.

American Red Cross Thanks Blood Drive Sponsors

The Mid-Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross Blood Services Committee took time out last week to thank its 173 local blood drive sponsors. These vital organizations - that host and promote regular local blood drives – are an important link to ensuring an adequate blood supply is available when needed. The luncheon, sponsored by Sparrow Health System, was held Thursday, March 13 at the St. Lawrence Campus.

American Red Cross Preparation Tips Before Military Deployment

1. Attend mobilization meetings given by your military unit as a family and take notes
2. Know the exact name of the military unit
3. Keep a copy of your service member’s orders and travel itinerary
4. Know your service member’s full name, social security number and complete military address
5. Discuss what and when bills are due
6. Have money saved
7. Create a new family budget
8. Leave an extra set of car and house keys
9. Complete a list of repair people to call
10. Know the location of utility (water, electric, gas, etc.) shut off valves
11. Have alternate care plans in place for children, elders and pets
12. Complete a will and proper Power of Attorney
13. Know how to contact your American Red Cross 24-hours a day.

The American Red Cross is marshalling resources locally, nationwide and around the world to assist members of the U S Military and their families as more and more troops are called to serve.

Through its Armed Forces Emergency Services Program, the American Red Cross response is a three pronged effort that can be described as:

1. Linking military personnel to their families here at home through the 24-hour emergency communication network.
2. Local outreach to members of the National Guard, Reservists and families
3. The mobilization and deployment of Red Cross workers into the area of conflict
